The median price for new homes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is close to $350,000. The builders blame rising costs for land, labor and construction materials for driving up new home prices.


The National Association of Home Builders estimates that the cost of building regulation has increased more than 30 percent over the last five years and added an average of more than $84,000 per new home built nationwide.

The builders say that new duties of up to 24 percent on most Canadian lumber are adding even more to their construction costs.


New houses in the D-FW area now cost on average about $100,000 more than a pre-owned home — one of the largest premiums ever for a new property.
