The temperature is going to drop into low teens soon. Please take the following precautions to prepare your home for the freezing temperature
-
Allow both hot AND cold water to slowly stream (not drip) from the faucets in the bathrooms and kitchen. Water stream should be at least as thick as a pencil lead. This is one of the most effective things you can do to prevent water in pipes from freezing.
-
If planning to be out of town for an extended time, open all faucets to stream water as discussed above. Please notify your landlord or a family member or a friend that the home will be vacant so that they can visit the home to check on the home in your absence.

-
Open cabinet doors under sinks to expose pipes to heat within the house.
-
Keep the thermostat in home at 68 °F or higher

-
Turn off your outdoor irrigation system.
-
Remove garden hoses from outside faucets and empty the hose before storing it. If you leave the garden hose connected to the outdoor faucet during a freeze, there is a high chance that the outdoor faucet will burst inside the wall. Please watch this video to understand this more

If water pipes become frozen, let them thaw naturally by exposing warmer air to the pipes by opening cabinets under sinks. Never try to thaw pipes using hair dryers or other forms of heat!
